These lactation brownies are made with ingredients that may help support milk supply for breastfeeding. They are rich, fudgy, and naturally gluten-free, with options that are dairy- and soy-free as well.

WHY THESE BROWNIES WORK

These brownies are based on an oat flour brownie recipe with one key addition: brewer’s yeast. Brewer’s yeast is known as a galactagogue, meaning it may help increase breast milk production. Combined with oat flour, these brownies provide a nutrient-rich base that can support lactation while still tasting delicious.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED

  • Oat flour – A good source of iron and a common ingredient in lactation recipes. Store-bought or homemade oat flour can be used. (1 cup rolled oats makes about 3/4 cup oat flour.)
  • Brewer’s yeast – Packed with vitamin B, iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium, and protein. Often used to support milk production.
  • Cocoa powder – Adds chocolate flavor. Use unsweetened cocoa or cacao powder.
  • Sea salt – Enhances all the flavors.
  • Baking powder – Helps the brownies rise.
  • Eggs – Provide structure. Flax eggs may be substituted, though the brownies may not rise as much.
  • Avocado oil – Moisturizes brownies with a neutral flavor. Other oils like coconut or olive can be used.
  • Maple syrup – A natural sweetener.
  • Unsweetened applesauce – Adds moisture. Store-bought or homemade works well.
  • Vanilla extract – Enhances flavor.
  • Chocolate chips – Optional. Choose allergen-friendly or low-sugar options.

HOW TO MAKE LACTATION BROWNIES

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare an 8×8 inch baking pan with oil or parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix oat flour, brewer’s yeast, cocoa powder, sea salt, and baking powder.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, avocado oil, maple syrup, applesauce, and vanilla extract.
  4. Gradually stir dry ingredients into wet ingredients until combined. Fold in chocolate chips gently.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake for 25–30 minutes. Brownies are done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Let cool before cutting.

FOODS THAT MAY HELP MILK SUPPLY

Certain foods are commonly used to support lactation:

  • Oats – High in iron, may help with milk production.
  • Barley – Contains beta-glucan, which may increase prolactin, the breastfeeding hormone.
  • Brewer’s yeast – Rich in vitamins, minerals, and protein. Known to support milk supply, but check with a doctor if taking medications.
  • Flaxseed – Contains omega-3 fatty acids and phytoestrogens, which may influence milk production.
  • Fennel – Seeds contain phytoestrogens and are often included in lactation teas.
  • Fenugreek seeds – Another common ingredient in lactation teas.

WHEN SHOULD YOU START EATING LACTATION BROWNIES?

Lactation treats can be eaten after birth, or some choose to start 1–2 weeks before delivery. Consult a doctor or lactation consultant before using brewer’s yeast.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU EAT THEM?

Start with one brownie per day and adjust based on results. Consistency may help maintain milk supply.

HOW QUICKLY DO THEY WORK?

Results may appear within 1–3 days if consumed regularly. Eating a treat 1–2 hours before breastfeeding or pumping is common.

CAN YOU EAT TOO MANY?

Yes. Overconsumption may lead to oversupply, gas, bloating, or headaches.
